The following photos show the difference between a tree that has been topped (and has grown suckers) and a tree that is growing in its natural shape.
Note the ball that has formed around the topped branch.
The same ball shown from a different angle - note how suckers grow from the cut branch, but the tree will never look like it did before the bad trimming.
